Artist statement
The plight of the indigenous and uncontactable tribe deserves to be heard. With globalisation and technology, we forget that somewhere in the deep jungle are real human beings, nature whisperers, animists who communicate with their ancestors for guidance in the quest for their daily survival. Yet poachers and capitalists dig deeper into nature to either take their food away from them or profit from the land that housed them. This series is a tribute to the endangered tribes like the Awa Guajas (Amazon), Jarawas (Andaman Islands), the Nukak (Colombia), the Elo Molo (Kenya) and the Nukak (Colombia) who only have less 600 people in each tribe left. There are more tribes unaccounted for on this earth. These are real lives at stake, to which if we turn a blind eye and participate in irresponsible travel activities such as the "human safari" will contribute to their extinction.
The Media:
As a digital remixer, the expression to showcase this issue digitally is a juxtaposition of the old world in modern time. The research was done through an extensive study of their lives through digital traces only, which is the reason for this choice to go digital. This is a glimpse of what could be the downfall of humanity should the tribes truly do "extinct". I seek the audience to champion this cause so we can decide for ourselves the kind of society and legacy we leave for our children.
As a new media, the best print is on fine art paper to achieve maximum effect.
