About the art
Artist statement
In "Currency #236", Natasha Lelenco presents a striking portrait against a vivid red background, where the profile of the figure is rendered in deep blue hues, creating a powerful contrast. The phrase encircling the figure reads, "Mi identidad es de aquí, pero no mis orígenes" ("My identity is from here, but not my origins"), reflecting a complex dialogue about the relationship between place, identity, and heritage, central themes in this series. The portrait’s intricate detailing, especially around the curly black hair and subtle scales emerging on the neck, evoke both individuality and transformation.
The figure is painted on a circular wooden panel, 26 cm in diameter, with the value of 222,57 euros inscribed below the neck. As with other pieces in the Currencies series, this variable price suggests an exploration of the arbitrary nature of human value, drawing parallels to how societies often assign worth based on origin, social standing, or ethnicity.
These works from the Currencies series are designed to function both individually or as part of larger compositions, offering collectors the opportunity to create installations as vast as desired. The artist also works on commission, crafting panels to fit custom spaces.
For those interested in acquiring multiple panels or commissioning custom works, please do not hesitate to get in touch for further information.
