Known Unknown

Aldous Hexley once wrote in his book, “there are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception”. If one sees only lights and
shapes in all beings, does it make him a bad visualiser? Being that, the abstract painting explores the different doors of cognisance.

Often, what we fear is not the unknown. Rather, it is what we think we know about the unknown. This abstract painting ‘The Known Unknown’ by the artist Peisy Ting
probes the fear and vulnerability, as we attempt to seek answers into what we may believe. However, the truth is we cannot understand without seeing the truth ultimately.

Some hope to gain insight into extraordinary states of mind and expect to see bright and colourful visionary landscapes. For example, the sphere in the middle might
become the "miracle, moment by moment, of naked existence". And this is neither agreeable nor disagreeable, but simply "is". Meaning and existence, pattern and
colour become more significant than spatial relationships and time. Furthermore, the duration is replaced by a perpetual present.

Although systematic reasoning is important, direct perception has intrinsic value too. And the man who comes back through the Door in the Wall will never be quite the same as the man who went out. After all, the more you see, the less you know for sure.
