Artist statement
"This is a seemingly placid scene of children playing in a kampong, roaming free, being one with nature and animals.
But one girl, dressed in a batik sarong is looking away, as if captivated by something she sees. We cannot see her face nor her expression, but we sense her longing and the curiosity of those around her. Could she be facing the future? Or will the future erase her memories?
With the urbanisation of Singapore, kampongs have given way to modern housing, trees have made way for roads. And yet our memories are rooted in the glory days of our youth. The batik sarong was a fragment of our heritage, the huge tree was where our hopes and dreams were planted.
Even as we move ahead, we must not forget our culture, our roots, where we came from. Because without a past, there will be no future."
