About the art
Artist statement
The Labroust Reading Room is a magnificent room located in the Richelieu site of the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, France. It was designed by the architect Henri Labrouste in the 1860s, and it is considered to be one of the most important examples of 19th-century library architecture. The reading room is a large, rectangular space with a high ceiling. The walls are lined with bookshelves, and the floor is made of marble. The most striking feature of the room is the use of cast iron columns and beams. For me it still ranks as one of Europe's most beautiful libraries.
