Romulo

This piece “Romulo” is part of my Maharlika series in which I create portraits of notable historical and prominent current figures of the Philippine culture and heritage. This is to promote to the world further awareness of the Filipino people, holding dear to my heart, my culture to which I aim to promulgate through the use of my paintbrush, depicting noble figures who founded the Filipino people today.

This painting delineates the excellence and regality I seek to depict, through the illustration of Carlos P. Romulo, who was a Filipino diplomat, statesman, soldier, journalist and author; most notably known for being the Former President of the United Nations General Assembly.

I have used a multitude of painting techniques, using the bistre and grisaille underpainting method to build the structure of this piece, then evolving through intricate layers of glazes to achieve the perfect colour desired, alongside complex maneuvering of chiaroscuro to build the tonal value of the back ground and the foreground, adding a nice contrast to make the subject more multidimensional.
