Artist statement
In ‘Aluyama,’ or ‘Dawn,’ Ruwan Prasanna embodies a visual style inherited from the Impressionists to contemplate the fleeting interplay of light and colour in nature. The impasto of paint with its thick brushstrokes and vivid colour flirts with the viewer’s tactile senses. At the forefront of his work is feeling—the artist stops working on a piece when the process of painting no longer brings him excitement. This temporality and immediacy in the work imbues it with life, presenting a calculated unfinishedness that alerts us to the ephemerality of nature.
