About the art
Artist statement
This image was inspired by a need for lightness and freedom from worries. During the first year and a half of the Corona pandemic I so often felt weighed down by everything, as I'm sure we all did. So I created this image to be as free, floating, light, bright, and uplifting as possible. I imagine it almost like a bird, letting my heart and mind soar through the air, careless and joyous. The bright orange fills us with warmth and summer sunlight, the light blue strip leads us up, up, and out of the image's frame, and the dark blue piece is like a rudder, or a bird's tail, making sure we stay on course. One edge of the orange shape is folded up like a wing, the intense blue underneath reflecting on the paper, like a shadow on a cloud.
I think of my collages more as drawings because that’s how they begin. I draw with oil sticks, pastels and pencils on large sheets and then cut them down into various shapes which I recombine into new colour compositions. I don’t try to ‘make’ the shapes, but rather just start cutting and see what happens. The images are intuitive; they reflect my emotions and desires or are inspired by something in my surroundings.
This work is signed on the front and titled on the back.
