Part of the From The Earth And Sea Collection, made using pigments from or grown in the earth of the South West or imported over the sea. Pigments that have a relationship to the South West of England and particularly its coast, the area where Needham grew up, and the place she longed for during lockdown. In the summer of 2020 and 2021 when travel was allowed she visited Hampshire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Cornwall and Dorset, researching pigments and collecting materials direct from the land. Needham was drawn to ancient sites, to the landmarks and barrows which look like fertility symbols, while marking places of burial. To the standing stones and that those forms which repeat through history. She was reminded of the role of this area as a conduit of people, ideas, trade, of the legal and piratical. Collecting these materials she sought evidence of the impact of nature and of humanity and the richness that comes from the movement of people. This painting is made using madder, mudrock ochre, chalk, oils and glue on wood.
