Remembrance

An abstract painting in blue and yellow made with French Ultramarine and yellow ochre pigments in oil on canvas. Can be coupled or tripled with the pieces Losing You From Over the Sea, and The Treasure you Brought Us From Over the Sea, works in the same size and including the same pigments plus carbon black. Other works in the same series but different sizes include The People Who came and the Ideas they Brought, and Looking For a Way Out.. The work references travel across the Mediterranean. French Ultramarine is the synthetic product developed n the industrial revolution which replaced genuine ultramarine which has been traded across the sea since antiquity and still is to the present day, and therefore holds within its material memory the echoes of that rich and continuous cultural exchange. In my work ochres and carbon black represent the human, being the earliest pigments to have been used in the material record of human culture, going back to pre-historic cave paintings.
