About the art
Artist statement
I wanted to create an object that can change its nature depending on the environment and its viewer. The inherent mutability allows the work to become something new.
––Seda Saar
Seda Saar distinguishes her work from the Light and Space artists of the 1970s through its mutability. The variation in the perceptual experience that occurs, is achieved through the layering of color in the fabrication process and with prism-like mirrors, reflecting and refracting light. Her forms have the effect of emitting light whose color and quality, and even their materiality, transform as the viewer passes by or light levels change. This has been described as disorienting, yet pleasurable, and has been tied to “the feminine” in the sense that it adjusts based on the conditions of the world around it yet remains itself.
I explore perception as a metaphor for the existential. In Revelations: Seeing Light, I wanted to stimulate the viewers senses and personal perspectives through a curious interplay of themes, materials, forms, and lighting. I wanted to illuminate and reveals our own higher spirit. Mirrored shapes and colorful shadows replicate natural phenomena, connecting to our emotional intelligence. Each installation allows the viewer to contemplate and question their own perceptions and beliefs on many levels: visual, emotional, mythic, and spiritual- uniting them to their higher self. Here I am exploring not only reality of geometry, materiality, or physics of light, but themes of child-like curiosity, solace, and connection with all life. Co- creating with the audience, I am exploring the powerful beauty of Nature, including that of the viewer, through self-reflection in the projected space seen in three dimensions. Interacting with colorful forms of reflections, projections, and shadows, they feel the power and wonder of Spirit. They become the moon and the stars, sunrise or sunset, each other, and themselves, no one and everyone.
