Impossible Triangle

Statement:
I explore perception as a metaphor for the existential. My paintings, Installations, and dimensional works play with viewers’ senses and personal perspectives. Not only do the colors appear in constant flux, but the mirrored backgrounds and materials create change as one moves about and regards them from different positions. Realized with interference paints – crushed, titanium-coated mica that refracts light -- the colors shimmer and shift, again depending on the angle of the viewer. The edges, whether of paintings or of dimensional sculptures, establish a discontinuity of form as viewers change their standpoints, challenging the notion of a fixed reality.

Relying on the physics of sensory perception, I use paint, pigments, forms and/or materials that manipulate light to create an unusual and engaging visual experience that is effective on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. Contradictions exist between color and form, perfection and accident, and idea versus image. Depending on refracted light or energy, each composition is derived from interactions exploring light and color; these interactions are posed in a formally controlled, minimalist geometry and emphatic materiality. The acrylic and mirror sculptures of the Polyhedron series allow me to establish perceptive geometry through the interplay of colorful form with shadows and reflections, deepening the projected space seen in three dimensions. However abstract, though, these compositions are drawn from life and allow me to represent dimensional form. The possibilities are endless -- just as in architecture and design.
