Artist statement
Highly acclaimed in the world of illustration, the talented Shan Jiang’s works transcend the boundary between fine art and illustration. Deeply influenced by Haruki Murakami and Italo Calvino’s writings, Japanese Manga and by memories of his childhood in Shanghai, Shan conjures up surreal imageries that question the long-term sustainability of the city and the environment.
Shan’s technique is a combination of old and new media – he first hand-draws the outlines of his works before rendering them in the computer, achieving a high level of vibrancy and hues that may not be easily achievable with traditional medium. Shan’s immaculately detailed and captivating works convey a myriad of human conditions and emotions in a wonderland setting that has become his trademark style.
