About the art
Artist statement
The "Electric Series" is a collaborative art project between Alba Escayo and Shih Yun Yeo. This series consists of three paintings that interact with one another through movement and color, creating a conversation about balance and harmony. Despite their distinct artistic styles, Escayo from Spain and Yeo from Singapore have formed a creative partnership that has evolved over several projects since their meeting in 2008. The most recent "Electric Series" represents the culmination of their collaborative work.
Escayo's paintings typically feature abstract landscapes in vibrant colors, while Yeo's works combine Chinese calligraphy traditions with energetic lines inspired by abstract expressionism. The series showcases a limited color palette ranging from yellows to blues and greens, all connected with splashes of black ink. This color range highlights the lines, forms, and textures in the works. The collaboration between the two artists results in layers of paint and ink that sometimes compete and sometimes harmonize, generating a lively conversation about color, movement, form, and line.
The title "Electric Series" signifies both the energetic movement within the paintings and the idea of connected circuits, where a charge travels through various components in order. Each of the three canvases is numbered, emphasizing their specific place within the overall arrangement. When viewed in order from left to right ("Electric Series #1" to "Electric Series #3"), the series demonstrates a progression. The first canvas is predominantly white with touches of green and black ink. The second work is primarily blue with green accents. The final painting incorporates all the colors, offering a balanced synthesis of the first two works. This sense of balance and fulfillment in "Electric Series #3" mirrors the harmonious collaboration that has developed between the two distinct artists.
