Artist statement
Artwork type: kakejiku
A kakejiku is a Japanese scroll painting or calligraphy which is usually displayed in a room for appreciation. Generally intended to be displayed for short periods, it is rotated according to season or occasion. The traditional crafts involved in creating a kakejiku is considered an art in itself.
‘SNOW LAND TOKYO’ is a minimalist work that captures the serene moment of the Tokyo Imperial Palace enveloped in snow. The intangible wind and atmosphere of the space are rendered in a collage of calligraphy and printed on traditional Japanese gold leaf paper delicately handcrafted by an artisan in Kanazawa.
The mounting material was specially made from fabric used in Nishijin fabric or kimono, selected and color coordinated by the artist himself.
