About the art
Artist statement
This area around South Bridge Road is where many Singaporean families can trace their past. While it looks very commercial now, people stayed here in apartments for a long time. Some of my friends still remember those days vividly. I would like the viewer to consider looking at this place as a neighbourhood with it's own history, characters and flavour. A word can change how you consider a street or building, just by adding context. Watercolour adds to the sense of transition and renewal-a sort of permanent flux. Having studied and painted Elgin Bridge in some detail, I saw the connection between this place and the bridge and wanted to bring that out, too. We keep wandering about, collecting memories and then return to new discoveries again and again.
