Artist statement
This picture of an American flag flying against a blue sky has been divided into parts on a grid format and reconstructed to form an abstract version of the subject. The flag colors of red, white, and blue lend themselves to a bold artistic treatment which I emphasize by adding other geometric patterns and incorporating them in the overall work to help tie together the composition. The American flag has always been a popular subject in art due to its bold graphic colors and shapes. Jasper Johns was one of the most famous artists to first popularize the flag as a subject in art with his Pop Art renditions of flag paintings.
