Artist statement
An ocean sunrise in a broken grid format. The grid guides me in placing elements, but it is also an underlying structure, something I know is there but not something I feel obligated to use. I love classical jazz music. The melody is always there, but the musicians are free to drift from it so long as they and other musicians in the group can keep it in their heads and return to that original melody, their “grid”, at any time. This work is a visual form of a “jazz grid”. What captured me most about this scene was the color harmony, which I tried to keep in my photograph. In any instances where I want to use pure color, as opposed to grabbing some part of an image to fulfill that purpose, I take that color directly from the scene and integrate it in order to preserve the integrity of the original scene.
