Artist statement
This image is from my “Odyssey” portfolio series, which features scenes that have been broken apart and reassembled into an abstract interpretation of the subject with an underlying geometric structure reflecting our desire to mentally dig deep into the surface of our environment to find its meaning. I sometimes think of this image style as “Photo-Cubism”, a technique of illustrating space volumetrically by moving through it to reveal alternate views of the same scene on one flat surface. This image is of a palmetto frond native to Florida. By breaking up the image and rearranging it I hoped to emphasize the geometrically symmetrical shapes we wonder at so often in nature.
