About the art
Artist statement
I make abstract paintings with paper. I am inspired to create paintings with minimalist undertone with simple lines and geometric shapes, juxtaposed with heavy and intense texture from paper debris in order to convey a sense of space, stillness and serenity as well as the accompanying intensity that exists just below the surface. In order to reveal this duality, my process entails applying several layers of paper on to canvas, and peel and sand them down once the surface dries. When the process is complete, the painting is left with a misty and hazy surface marked by large geometric shapes and lines with rich fiber and texture. As a result, my work reveals an archeological quality as one can visibly sense layers having been built and destroyed, revealing what is underneath.
