About the art
Artist statement
"It happens that the person who stares at a bright spot for a long time dies to external reality, or that reality takes to dying around him" writes Paul Nouge in L'homme en proie aux images; the photographer gracefully describes this floating of vision that Zuzanna Rokita precisely seeks in her works. I don't know if she has ever looked the sun straight in the eye until sparkling phosphenes appear, but her pictorial and photographic work is centred on the permanent quest for the most sensitive representation of light possible. The artist who says she "tries to portray light", which is the source of our perception of reality as well as of any image, nevertheless refuses to represent its sources and prefers to rely on luminous sensations to give a material interpretation. For example, she uses layers, cuts and superimpositions on the surface of a black canvas, until the white emerges, by dint of transparencies and opacities. It is also the use of spray cans, whose sprayed paint is deposited in light layers on its support. It is also the use of an empty slide projector that projects a new screen onto his canvases, luminous matter that is superimposed on other luminous matter. It is also, finally, her work of photograms for which she uses ambiguous objects, which capture the light and restore it in materiality sometimes of great density, sometimes almost vanishing: tracing paper, sugar, plastic bags... Zuzanna Rokita's work is austere and precise, but this is not refinement or a stylistic effect: the only thing that counts in her compositions is the pure contemplation of a vibrant optical sensation.
