Ex-Art Basel Hong Kong Director Launches New International Art Fair in Taipei to Be Presented By UBS

Magnus Renfrew, former director of Art Basel Hong Kong (previously known as Art HK before it was acquired by Art Basel), has announced the launch of his latest project, Taipei Dangdai (台北当代), a new international art fair that he has co-founded and will be directing.
We are developing Taipei Dangdai as a new opportunity for Asian galleries to bring their programs to wider audiences, and for international collectors to have a significant point of entry for discovering important works from Asia and beyond.
Speaking about the decision to launch in Taipei Mr Renfrew says "Taipei is home to one of the longest-established gallery scenes in Asia, including world-class museums, a vibrant artist community, an internationally recognized biennial, and one of the most sophisticated collector bases in Asia. We are developing Taipei Dangdai as a new opportunity for Asian galleries to bring their programs to wider audiences, and for international collectors to have a significant point of entry for discovering important works from Asia and beyond."
Slated to launch its first edition in January 2019, the fair will be presented by leading global financial services company, UBS. It will coincide with another major art event: the 11th Taipei Biennial, which runs from 17 November 2018 till 10 March 2019. Taipei Dangdai is currently committeed by Elisa Uematsu of Taka Ishii Gallery, Edouard Malingue of Edouard Malingue Gallery, Isa Lorenzo of Silverlens Gallery, Waling Boers of Boers-Li Gallery and Patricia Crockett of Sprüth Magers, who will be making selections for the fair.

Dangdai, meaning 'the present moment' in Chinese, encapsulates the fair's focus on surveying the up-to-date happenings within the contemporary Asian art world. Subtitled 'Art & Ideas', the fair will focus on two main concepts: a leading international art fair and a convening of thought leaders from various fields.
The format of the fair will consist of a main exhibition section (Galleries), which presents leading galleries from Taiwan, Asia, and the rest of the world, as well as three specialized sectors designed to highlight new galleries (Young Galleries Sector), spotlight artists through solo presentations (Solos Sector), and feature works with accessible pricing (Salon Sector). The first edition is set at 80 galleries, the size of the fair will be modest, which is definitely set to grow over the editions. These galleries will comprise both Asian and international venues, with a focus on those that are committed to showing their programmes in Asia.
