The Hong Kong-born, Australia-based artist investigates late Western modernism which prompted significant phases of work from a bi-cultural viewpoint. In History Projects, finds impetus in the history of violence and benevolence. He also later developed a visual history of the Chinese in Australia since 1840. His Abstract Paintings project offers a reassessment of technology's devastation to bodily skills.

John Young

"Young is a highly regarded, scholarly artist and generous contributor to the wider arts community in Australia. He is an artist who manages to distil his deep research. It is almost 15 years since Perth has had the opportunity to view locally a complete exhibition of Young’s work. I am grateful and excited that John has so willingly created new work for the Gallery and for our audience. It will be a pleasure to welcome him back to Western Australia.’" - Margaret Moore, Director of MOORE CONTEMPORARY

Since his first exhibition in 1979, John has participated in over 70 exhibitions worldwide, and his works have been collected by major museums as well as corporate and private collections. Throughout his distinguished career key themes and areas of research have informed his practice. John consistently incorporates elements of aesthetic theory and trans-cultural art history to consider the culture surrounding globalisation and migratory dislocation; the sociological impacts of technology; and philosophical notions of memory, resonance, and melancholia.
