New Art Fair 'Unscheduled' Launches in Hong Kong this June
ByNathalie SooA new art fair, ‘Unscheduled’, will be launching in Hong Kong next month, organised by Hong Kong Art Gallery Association (HKAGA). The event, which will take place from 17 – 27 June 2020 will be held in a heritage-listed Duplex Studio at Tai Kwun Centre of Heritage & Arts for its inaugural year.
The 10-day fair will see the participation of twelve of HKAGA’s member galleries. Each gallery will be spotlighting one artist, and highlighting their individual artistic practices through a solo presentation of their works.

Following the cancellations of Art Basel Hong Kong and Art Central in March earlier this year, ‘Unscheduled’ will mark the first major ‘physical’ art event in months. With great optimism, organisers HKAGA, hope that the exhibition will “re-energise Hong Kong’s art scene” after months of uncertainty and disruption. They assert that ‘Unscheduled’ will be a platform for selling and networking, aiming to showcase some of the best modern contemporary art from the continent.

Through careful curatorial direction by Sara Wong and Ying Kwok, the fair will adopt a non-traditional format by not having aisles, and instead have a free flowing floorplan that will allow booths to "bleed into one another". This is said to be done as a way to create a decentralised and more inclusive framework for the showcase.
The launch of the fair brings a much needed boost of confidence in the art world during the COVID-19 crisis. It certainly instils a glimmer of hope that this will start the ball rolling with future art events.

A portion of the proceeds from the fairs ticket sales will be donated to a local charity, Hands On Hong Kong. The charity will support those who have been most gravely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, to address pressing health and safety concerns, measures like timed ticketing will be taken to avoid overcrowding and unnecessary risk at the fair.
