Throughout history, what is often considered the most valuable object often carries spiritual significance—the capability of an object to create transcendental feeling and connection with non-human or even otherworldly beings. From the architecture of places of worship, statues, and paintings depicting deities to the tools used in religious rituals, these objects are not only profoundly integrated into the daily lives of the people but also made with the utmost regard and care. Created by the best artisans employing the highest level of craftsmanship, these objects offer a lens to the diverse perspectives of our world. However, in today's fast-paced, technologically-driven world, tangible cultural treasures are being replaced by ephemeral, mass-produced commodities driven by profit, diluting the intrinsic values of functionality, aesthetics, and spirituality. This commodification strips objects of their sacredness, severing the bonds that once united humanity with nature and reducing the natural world to mere resources for exploitation. Is this how we would like to continue to live?
This body of work is an attempt to explore the following questions—How can we design contemporary objects of spiritual significance that reminds us of all values beyond monetary gains? What role do designers play in fostering a deeper connection between humanity and the natural world through their creations?
