About the art
Artist statement
The Cretto di Gibellina (crack of Gibellina), also known as "The Great Cretto", is a landscape artwork undertaken by Alberto Burri in 1984 built on the rubble of the old city of Gibellina. The original city of Gibellina was completely destroyed in the 1968 Belice earthquake. Burri created an immense white crack of concrete as a permanent symbol of what happened in Gibellina.
Cretto sculptural vase is designed and made by hand by Barbara Raimondo in Hong Kong and inspired by the touching Cretto di Gibellina.
The technique used is coiling. By its nature, it is imperfect and unique. Slight variation from the piece pictured is expected. Surface irregularities are an inherent part of the design and should not be seen as flaws. They contribute to the unique qualities of the vessel.
The clay used is stoneware clay added firesand and porcelain slip. The result of this process is a unique texture. The piece has a matte surface, and is raw and unglazed.
The stoneware fires on a slow burning curve at a different temperatures to let the natural color to comes out.
The vase is not watertight and can be used for dry floral arranging or as a sculptural element for the home.
To care for the ceramic piece, hand rinse the piece only. It is not dishwasher safe. Stoneware piece must be handled carefully to prevent any damage. Stoneware is a semi-porous material, so to prevent sweating and condensation on a surface, the piece has to dry out before refilling. Depending on the surface where to place the ceramic piece on, attach felt to the bottom of a sculpture could be an option.
