About the art
Artist statement
I was born and grew up in a small region in Italy, Liguria, a half moon of land set between the Mediterranean sea and the beautiful Appenino Ligure mountains where the olive trees are cultivated.
Frantoio sculptural vase is designed and made by hand by Barbara Raimondo in Hong Kong and it is inspired by the frantoio which is the stone olive press used in the past to produce the olive oil.
The technique used is mixed, trowing and hand building. By its nature, it is imperfect and unique. Slight variation from the piece pictured is expected. Surface irregularities are an inherent part of the design and should not be seen as flaws. They contribute to the unique qualities of the vessel.
The clay used is stoneware. The piece has a matte surface, and is raw and unglazed.
The stoneware fires on a slow burning curve at a different temperatures to let the natural color to comes out.
The vase is not watertight and can be used as a sculptural element for the home.
To care for the ceramic piece, hand rinse the piece only. It is not dishwasher safe. Stoneware piece must be handled carefully to prevent any damage. Stoneware is a semi-porous material, so to prevent sweating and condensation on a surface, the piece has to dry out before refilling. Depending on the surface where to place the ceramic piece on, attach felt to the bottom of a sculpture could be an option.
