Artist statement
Along the coast between Trapani and Marsala lies this evocative landscape of saline (shallow salt pools) and windmills. The salt from these marshes is considered Italy’s finest and has been big business for centuries. Saline sculptural vase is designed and made by hand by Barbara Raimondo in Hong Kong and it is inspired by the landscape of saline.
The technique used is hand building. By its nature, it is imperfect and unique. Slight variation from the piece pictured is expected. Surface irregularities are an inherent part of the design and should not be seen as flaws. They contribute to the unique qualities of the vessel.
The clay used is stoneware clay added firesand and mixed with porcelain clay. The result of this process is a unique texture. The piece has a matte surface, and is raw and unglazed.
The stoneware fires on a slow burning curve at a different temperatures to let the natural color to comes out.
The vase is watertight and can be used for floral arranging or as a sculptural element for the home.
To care for the ceramic piece, hand rinse the piece only. It is not dishwasher safe. Stoneware piece must be handled carefully to prevent any damage. Stoneware is a semi-porous material, so to prevent sweating and condensation on a surface, the piece has to dry out before refilling. Depending on the surface where to place the ceramic piece on, attach felt to the bottom of a sculpture could be an option.
