About the art
Artist statement
Inner Shell is a series of handbuilt ceramic sculptural vessels. The totemic forms are inspired by a macro view of broken and washed-up beach matter. Shells, coral, sponges, seaweed also include non-organic objects such as rope and fishing tackle.
The process for this body of work is hand-building with coils and then carving the clay to achieve curves and angles. The twisted coil technique is revealed in the hollow of the vessel. The bubbly bleached pink eroded surface is an application of glaze that is the signature of my work.

Based in: Melbourne
Bettina Willner's practice considers the connection between material, form, nature, architecture and memory within contemporary ceramics. Organic structures, textural and goldene glazes are characteristics of her sculptural pieces, and, in combination, produce objects that sit between sculpture, painting and drawing.
