Artist statement
‘To burn’ is an action that contains numerous meanings, and can be a very deep and heavy topic, linking with life and death. But rather than the meaning of the action or the philosophical intent, my focus was on the texture of the burnt surface.
Whilst searching for the texture that can maximise the textural difference of the burnt wood, the brass came up to me. The artificial, smooth and cold texture of brass gives a great contrast against the raw, natural and warm texture of the burnt oak.
Through the form of covering the burnt oak seat with curved brass around it, this lets people focus on the burnt surface of the seat as well as stimulating their tactile desire. Also by the action of seating on it, it breaks the tension coming from the structure that is made out of a rather thin metal plate and crumbly-looking seat, as well as it gives the unexpected comforting experience as the back of the chair covers the body.
