About the art
Artist statement
The LAVA chair takes inspiration from Gerrit Rietveld’s work, specifically the Military Chair. Its blocky symmetrical form is held in place using interlaced wood.
I wanted to experiment with unconventional ways of interlocking wood, relying on only 4 squared bars laid vertically & horizontally. I first built the lower skeleton layer of the chair, and later decided (based on the chairs ‘weakest points’) where to place further horizontal beams in order to create a balanced and robust structure.
The backrest is supported by two elongated beams stretched beyond the vertical, which push onto the lower horizontal beam of wood allowing it to have flexibility when leaning on the backrest. This was fitted together using bolts and dowels.
The work can present minor s imperfections as it is all handmade and manufactured trying to minimise the waste of materials.
