Artist statement
Walks in a nearby forest inspired Welland so it's not surprising it reminds me of certain modern Canadian landscape painters, Lawren Harris in particular. Welland combines the body and the landscape; a robust, totemic vessel with gradient bands of colour reverberating like a force from within. The blue holds significance as a colour of great focus and determination. Momentary ellipses in pattern alter the perception of depth, perhaps suggesting pockets of silence, or hidden spaces within.
