Artist statement
In the Carpet Matter series Cenedella uses carpet waste to create new design artefacts.
Carpet is the preferred flooring solution in UK housing, nine out of ten households have carpet on their floor. Unfortunately, a very small amount of this carpet is recycled properly, the rest of it is sent to incinerators or deposited in landfills; damaging the environment.
Since most of the carpet is made with synthetic fibre, the properties of thermoplastic materials are used to reshape and repurpose this material for the creation of new design artefacts.
The Carpet Matter collection is made of carpet waste heated up and reshaped using different kinds of moulds and reinforced fibres. The material is hardened and create a unique texture that can't be replicated and make each object unique.
Please be aware that these objects are hand-made using discarded carpet, so small variations in the texture and colour are inevitably related to the production technique and the medium used. The colour depends on the availability of the material, please get in touch to discuss possible variations.
