Artist statement
This version of my Tryst tables makes a feature of the striking contrast between the heartwood and sapwood of Yew, which I have always admired, but have never before seen used in furniture without looking rustic.
My solution was to saw the yew lengthwise to open it out into a mirror-image “book-match”. The challenge was to find six pieces that could all be cut to the same profile. I will make up to ten of this design, but even within those ten, each one will necessarily be as unique as the wood obliges it to be.
Most people who have seen it admire the way in which the design is led by the shape of the wood, but not totally subservient to it.
