Artist statement
Hutong describes traditional living areas within narrow alleys in Beijing. The term hutong induces an old Beijing where bicycles were abundant, and industrialization was sparse. In recent years the number of hutongs has dropped dramatically due to the rapid growth of modernization in China. SUGO design remembers these charming and chaotic structures during the few years the firm’s founders spent expanding their design consortium. It is with this sense of romantic nostalgia that created this design as a tribute to the people of Beijing as well as the world to remember. The laser cut steel structural support of the lamp is based on the abstracted masterplan of the San miao jie Hutong, one of the oldest remaining hutong in Beijing. The crystals represent each hutong houses and their unique spatial planning within the city grid formation. When the lamp structure is without crystal, it remains a unique piece of sculpture revealing the led base lighting underneath the structure. The design is entirely customizable by the user as crystals of different height and colors can be places freely in the openings which also alters the reflectivity and illumination index of the design. SUGO design believes that we will be seeing a great magnitude of changes and displacement with China’s past architecture in the forthcoming future and the user of the design becomes a metaphor of people that initiate the changes of the landscape. SUGO design hopes by understanding the ideology behind this lamp, the user will acknowledge the value of the hutong and treasure its change as a means of preserving its existence for a new era.
Hutong is created with one of the most advance 3D metal matrix printing process in the world as the main structural body has no joints. The crystals are special one off custom molded design in collaboration with Swarovski and specially ingrained with our patented photocatalytic technology.
All SUGO lighting sculptures are integrated with the latest generation of Photocatalytic Environment Cleansing Technology that can permanently eliminate all strands of Corona Virus | 99.9% Bacteria | Industrial Pollutants activated only with natural light and circulating air. Our technology is all tested and certified in Italy and Thailand using our own Italian In-House Scientific Research Team and we are the world first company to employ this technology into groundbreaking artwork.
