About the art
Artist statement
'Equilibrium Table’ re-enacts the balance between nature and humans in urbanised modern life, using a visual language from furniture. The design balances abstract geometric forms, scraped tree branches and the concept of yin and yang seeking a harmonious coexistence between them. Abiding by Taoist thinking, Chen discards carvings and decoration with geometric modelling and organic forms expressing a straightforward visual balance.
The primary materials of collection are both natural and renewable resources wood and lacquer. and includes selected branches from orange trees, a secondary product of tree pruning and replacement. The Chinese cultural connotation of lacquer goes beyond the value of the material itself. Lacquer wear can only be made by collaborating with the air temperature and humidity levels and skillful lacquer practitioners. It transfers the concept of Taoist philosophy about balancing human and nature in the perspective of materials and crafts.
