Evgeniya Plotnikova of EVG.WORKS is a ceramic artist and a practicing architect. Born and raised in Siberia, she has lived in Chicago, New York and currently resides in Seattle. Her journey in ceramics started in a Brooklyn clay studio with the interest of releasing a creative energy and exploring a fascination with the material. The interest grew into passion that led to setting up a home studio to play and clay. Designs are developed by experimenting with hand building techniques and have a contemporary design sensibility.
EVG.WORKS designs are functional Art. Most of them are vessels that hold a water, others hold a space. They act as a vase for a single flower or a bouquet, creating new possibilities for floral arrangements, while they are sculptural and articulated to be object d’art in and of themselves. They are full of vitality, and if you were to listen to them carefully, they might tell you some of their secrets.
Home Studio has a perfect set-up for hand building. The table is located directly in front of the large doors into the garden. It's a very soothing and magical space.
What inspires you?
Minimal sculptural sensibility, rich emerald color, orca whales, post-modern boldness, conceptual fashion, radical designs, classical operatic singing, curves, water, poetry.
Describe your creative process.
I work with other media, such as felt and marble, but my focus remains on ceramics and porcelain. Designs are developed by experimenting with hand building techniques and color. I often use gold luster to highlight details. Most of designs are slab-built out of colored porcelain, with color pigment mixed into the clay body and a clear glaze applied on the inside only.
