Hi, I'm Hana. When I was 51 years old, I un-intentionally started Threadapeutic, a sustainable textile art studio based in Jakarta, Indonesia. "Painting" with fabric waste the last 8 years has given me a new lease of life.

My Journey:
I grew up learning basic hand stitching techniques from my seamstress mother in Surabaya, Indonesia. It became a source of therapy for me. At 18, I studied Business in Los Angeles, as per my parents' wishes, which was where I met my husband. Together we raised our three daughters in Jakarta and Singapore. Approaching 50 years of age in 2014, I wanted to try something new and answered the call to volunteer at Indonesia Fashion Week as a translator. But I didn't expect my next assignment in 2015 to be making souvenir bags out of fashion waste. I received mountains of fabric offcuts and deadstock from local fashion designers. It was overwhelming. With the expert help of a retiring tailor (Pak Kusworo) and my niece (Jeanne), we began making durable souvenir bags out of the materials we received. Threadapeutic was born.

Our Materials & Process:
Since 2015, we've been receiving fabric offcuts and deadstock from a variety of local up-cycling partners - including batik boutiques, garment factories, bridal ateliers, even a hospital. And we've spent the last 8 years (and counting) mastering and pushing the limits of a fundamental fabric manipulation technique, the faux chenille, which has given rise to the rich textures and colour-play characteristic of our tapestries today. Each piece is a collaborative effort and takes us about 3 months to complete.

Our Team:
Now, we're a team of 6 textile artisans based in Jakarta who turn fabric waste into one-off tapestries and architectural panels. Our work has been shown in Paris, Tokyo, and Bali. 100% of our profits go to good living wages for our artisans, and training other local artisans to make up-cycled products of exceptional quality.
