Isabella Kullmann lives and works in London.
She studied history and history of art at the Sorbonne in Paris before embarking on a career in journalism and publishing. She worked for numerous publications including British Vogue where she was Picture Editor for over ten years. She took up glass making in her spare time beguiled by the creative possibilities of the material. She completed an MA in Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art in 2015 and an MPhil in 2020.
What inspires you?
I am interested in the glass object in a situated environment – the play of light, the fall of shadows, the reflection on the surface, and the refraction of colour. The architectural space or domestic interior thus becomes active: adding colour, movement, and light to the material form.
Describe your creative process.
Lots of sketches and maquettes and then 'what if' moments when working in the hot shop with a glassblower.
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
Carlo Scarpa, Saul Leiter, Peter Zumthor among many others...
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
A Palomino Blackwing pencil.
Where do you go for inspiration?
I am a great believer in the serendipitous moment. Wherever you are and whatever you see there will always be something that feeds into your work in some way.
