I am a designer-maker working in ceramics. I have spent many years as a freelance Illustrator and now use my illustration skills to carve my drawings in clay. I make plaster moulds and slip cast in porcelain or parian. I reference Wedgwood’s Jasperware, combining sprigged work with contemporary shapes.
There is a decline in British bird species. I raise awareness of the threats to British bird species. My images rely on the visual similarity of fossils to the low relief method of ceramic sprigs. The pieces here are part of a body of work entitled ‘Future Fossils’. I am based in the UK and studied ceramics at Manchester Metropolitan University, achieving my Masters in 2020.
What inspires you?
I am motivated by tying to communicate my message about how our wildlife is disappearing.
Describe your creative process.
I start with drawing and then carve my drawing into porcelain to make a 3 dimensional drawing. I use these carvings to make my moulds. I see mould making as central to my work, in a way the moulds are my work, the designing is all in the mould making.
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
I have always loved Picasso, though his influence on my work is very indirect! Ceramicists I admire include Hitomi Hosono, Michael Eden and Joan Hardie.
Where do you go for inspiration?
I go bird watching every week and always love visiting galleries and museums.
