My work is an exploration of the balance between the organic and the abstract, reflecting the juxtaposition of the contradictory and often surprising nature of human experience. Drawing inspiration from natural forms such as the fluidity of water or the movements of the body, I combine these familiar shapes with geometric forms to explore themes around transformation, emotional experience and human connection.
I started hand-building with clay in 2017 in retaliation against working with the digital screen in my graphic design work, to express my creativity using this tactile, natural and ancient material. However I have found that aspects of my background in design have influenced my work. I experiment with exaggerated shapes and proportions to create harmony and balance. Smooth curves often intertwine with sharp edges and clean lines, suggesting the constant flux between stability and change. I use this play between scale, shape and space to create whimsical forms that capture the imagination.
All of my work is carefully crafted by hand at the ceramics studio Clay Collective in Hackney, London.
