Sibylle Tarazi is a product designer and aesthete based in Beirut, Lebanon. Raised in Beirut, Paris and Rome, she graduated in Graphic design and Fine arts from the American University of Beirut in 2002 and with a Master’s degree in Accessories design specializing in jewelry from Milan’s Domus Academy in 2007.
Born to a family of archaeologists, designers and craftsmen specializing in Middle Eastern art, Sibylle was inevitably immersed in a stimulating historical and contemporary art milieu which clearly stands out in her art. Conscious that fulfilling a role in tune with her background could play for or against her own artistic aspirations, she spent much of her life working towards distinguishing herself and developing her own unique style.
During her frequent travels to Europe, visiting ateliers, museums and galleries in search of inspiration she resolved to achieve a collection of pieces that would be dreamed of and coveted: “I knew I wanted to do something very special, very different, very exclusive, something that would create links between the past, present and future.”
What inspires you?
Nature, and noble material deriving from the latter inspire me… They already have a story, then I add up my story to their rawness thus creating the shape and the design.
Describe your creative process.
Inspiration and sketching in the begining are key. Then, working closely with my artisans who advise me and inspire me all the while handling the material, my pieces take shape. I usually leave room for flexibility.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
Refined, whimsical, harmonious
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
Les Lalannes, Loulou de la Falaise, Salwa Raouda, Etel Adnan, Giacometti
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
The meter, to verify and adjust the proportions and harmony in my pieces.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
I was advised to develop my own unique style that will distinguish me.
Where do you go for inspiration?
Nature mostly, a place where you can find peace, away form city noise. Inspiration also derives from the creative process in the atelier and one piece leads to another, which creates continuity.
