PHAT is a British design studio representing the collaborative work and professional partnership of Claudia Surrage and Christian Cowper. Christian and Claudia combine youthful simplicity with elegant sophistication - playfully treading a path between art and design.

Christian and Claudia met at Northumbria University, both studying Three-Dimensional Design: Furniture and Product - both achieving First Class Honours. Through various creative endeavours; their love for art, design, and simply making things formed a strong friendship.

Alongside their final major projects at Northumbria University, the development of numerous collaborative projects were also underway. Projects spanned through ceramics, jewellery, and furniture design. The progression, motivation, and positivity of working collaboratively strengthened each others focus, growing their creative pastimes into something more legitimate: Phat.

Now, the duo's studio is based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, north England. Operating in an array of creative fields, Christian and Claudia’s experience spans from furniture, lighting, and product design, to ceramics, jewellery, and sculpture. Projects are undertaken both in collaboration with established companies, as well as personally designed and produced work.

More About Studio Phat

Question IconWhat inspires you?

Everything! Traditional Crafts and Artistic Practices are of great interest to us and often inspire our creations!

Question IconDescribe your creative process.

A mass of idea generation no matter how stupid is always needed in the initial phase- this helps us to overcome a sense of preciousness and self consciousness that often restricts creativity- avoiding the classic blank page moment experienced by many creatives!

Question IconWhat are 3 words that best describe your work?

Bold, Balanced, Playful

Question IconWho are some artists that have influenced your work?

Inspiration for us is like crashing waves against the harbour wall: organic clashing with architectural. Artist Alexander Calder’s genius work with shape and perception, and architect Mario Botta’s wonderful balance of geometry and human touch are definitely a couple of influential references for us. One place that is creatively exhilarating for us is Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. It ignites you with ideas, and a real appreciation for the crafts and beliefs spanning many cultures and times.

Question IconWhat is the most important tool when creating your work?

For us it is our hands, basically any part of our body that can draw, build and make!

Question IconWhat is the best piece of advice you have been given?

Just have a go and don’t be afraid to fail- we are always learning and mistakes are part of that process!

Question IconWhere do you go for inspiration?

To new, old and familiar places
