Philip officially began his artistic career in 2003 at The Cleveland Institute of Art, although growing up in different cultures around Europe laid the foundation for his artistic journey. After five years of study towards his Bachelor of Fine Arts, Philip spent seven years travelling the American landscape, eventually finishing his degree remotely from San Diego, California. In 2019, Philip completed his Masters from Cranbrook Academy of Art before relocating to Korea to live and work as an Artist in Residence at ClayArch Museum in Gimhae, Korea. He now lives and practices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Philip’s practice deals with pace and time through the material’s tactility, exploring its meandering yet rhythmic qualities as they reflect his peripatetic past. Coil building is a fundamental building technique which Philip uses to reference history, pace, materiality and form. There is a symbiosis which occurs between the clay and the artist once building commences; there is an understanding; there is an immense amount of touch involved, imprinting the bond between material and maker.
