Yankatu - Design with Soul

Born: 2015

Hometown: São Paulo

Based in: Jundiaí

Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros is a designer, visual artist and researcher, founder of Yankatu - Design with Soul.
With a degree in business administration and interior design, Maria Fernanda has worked in the field for over 20 years. She migrated to furniture design in 2014, creating Yankatu, a design studio through which she carries out projects with social impact alongside Brazilian artisans. The encounter with the art world happened naturally in 2020 when the search for the appreciation of Brazilian artisans and their knowledge generates a growing discomfort regarding invisibility and lack of knowledge about the reality of Brazilian cultural traditions. Her work is based on relationships that go beyond the gaze and are established on mutual trust and admiration. His production spans a long timelessness and also a continuity, resulting from the privilege and fluidity of the otherness of established relationships. It is in the power of art that she finds the way to share her learning, activate the gaze and listening of others, seeking to generate in them the same discomfort she feels and, in this way, encourage them to act. It is through a relational aesthetic that she aims to join forces because the reaction of the other, the spectator, is essential for the realization of her art, which does not end with the created object but rather expands into the immaterial and impalpable field. Her production involves various materials without settling on anyone, despite her familiarity with solid wood. It goes from clay to feathers with the same lightness that conveys strong messages in a poetic way.

More About Yankatu - Design with Soul

Question IconWhat inspires you?

Our cultural heritage and the artisans who are the guardians of ancestral traditions and techniques that help us understand our roots. Their stories, way of life, the way they relate to the raw material, the nature around them, the community in which they live, all of this is a starting point for the research that brings soul to the works I create.

Question IconDescribe your creative process.

I travel to communities and villages like a blank piece of paper. I free myself from all the concepts and prejudices that society sometimes imposes on us so that I can be open to all stimuli and learn from artisans, their stories, techniques and ways of life. I photograph everything that catches my eye, I write down all the emotions I experienced and from then on I start doodling without worrying about creating something. Little by little the drawings take shape and when I see the piece it is there, ready to be born.

Question IconWhat are 3 words that best describe your work?

Authenticity, excellence, respect.

Question IconWho are some artists that have influenced your work?

Campana Brothers and Arthur Bispo do Rosário. In different ways, the freedom of their creations showed me that it was possible, whether because they wanted to escape the standards or because they didn't know they existed.

Question IconWhat is the most important tool when creating your work?

The artisans' hands and my hands. Besides my creativity that I allow to be free.

Question IconWhat is the best piece of advice you have been given?

"You are breaking a new path, it will not be easy because people tend to be afraid of the unknown. Don't take shortcuts or lose focus, move on and don't stop, Brazilian handicrafts needs you."

Question IconWhere do you go for inspiration?

I feel inspired when I immerse myself in communities where I can experience the daily lives of artisans.
