A journey that zooms into the creative energy, transformation and grassroots innovation of the region to tell the story of the next billion users: from the region as a whole, to its cities and people.
From 1 Billion to 1 is a journey that zooms into the creative energy, transformation and grassroots innovation of Southeast Asia to tell the story of the next billion users: from the region as a whole, to its cities and its people. Considered one of world's fastest-growing economic regions, this 2-metre video installation traces the journey through different perspectives.
Beginning with mother-nature, From 1 Billion to 1, plays with multiple perspectives from a macro to micro level highlighting the elements that make Southeast Asia unique. The visual abstraction reflects the new sets of behaviours emerging within the region thanks to cutting-edge technology and fast connectivity.
Made up of original drone and stock footage, this video highlights the paradoxical realities of confinement and growth, traditions and innovation in a Southeast Asia setting.
Google's new Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore aim to embody the Southeast Asian spirit and a sense of community and connection with the region. With their move to their new offices, there will be a focus on the "next billion users" that are estimated to arise from emerging markets like India and Indonesia. Kamarul's works looks at this concept from both a macro and micro perspective, addressing how the regional landscape changes and adapts, and zooming in on the individual.
About Kamarulzaman Bin Mohamed Sapiee
(b. 1990, Singapore)
Kamarul is a multi-disciplinary artist. Currently pursuing his BA in NTU’s School Of Art, Design & Media, Kamarul’s works explore the notion of everyday objects and using them as a novel element. Kamarul gained global exposure after representing Singapore in the first ever World Event Young Artists (WEYA) in Nottingham, UK in 2012. He exhibited his series titled Facial Codes at the International Symposium of Electronic Art (ISEA) in Vancouver, Canada in 2015. Kamarul's works have also been exhibited in shows in Singapore.
