André Baldet is a painter-illustrator-graphic designer-posterist-comic artist and a passionate traveler.
He was born in the south of France. He majored in graphic art and art history while studying in Toulouse.
After graduating, he spent six years travelling and teaching painting on fabric throughout North and South America, the Carribean Islands, Western Africa, the Indian Ocean and Asia to broaden his horizons. Since 1996, he has been working in the Paris region as an illustrator, graphic designer and painter, in a variety of fields including advertising, digital imagery, art poster design and educational books for children.
In parallel with image assignments for communication or editing, he leads a global and original artistic project, "Caravan", which brings together the works that the world and its extraordinary diversity inspire. Unlike the painters-travelers who work on a motive, André does not work directly on the spot, but, rather he makes field surveys by taking notes of views and quick sketches. The real work of creation is done in the neutrality of his studio. He rewrites the journey, reinvents it and re-interprets it in complete freedom by relying on his know-how of the image.
Considering that each trip of André's is unique and has its own language of shapes and colors, he applies to a permanent stylistic renewal, letting the places visited influence and guide his art. It is the plurality of expressions that makes the singularity of this project. The variety of original propositions is therefore very large, but the coherence effect dominates with a luminous palette and an impression of lightness, tranquility and cheerfulness that permeates the essence of the work. The idea of pleasure feeds the creative process.
What inspires you?
I have two main passions: art and travelling. My work as a painter is exclusively inspired by my travel experience.
Describe your creative process.
I need to get out of my studio, to see the world, to feel somewhere else - to be somehow destabilized. On the spot, I am like a sponge, I fill myself with the ambient air, noises, smells, colors... Back in my studio, I will rely on this collection to recreate cities and places visited and passed through the filter of my imagination.

Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
S. Scully, D. Hockney, S. Jaffe, W. Lachance…
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
Scraps of papers and a ball point pen to be able to write down inspiring ideas anywhere at any time
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
when it comes to art, we should not listen too much to others but rather listen to our desires, our emotions and trust our intuition.
Where do you go for inspiration?
Where I haven’t been yet.
