Martin Ecker (*1963 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany) lives and works in Berlin.
Ecker began his artistic work as a musician at the age of 14, later adding performance and acting until he began to explore painting, photography and video art. Martin Ecker is a German photographer and painter who has devoted much of his work to deciphering the reaction of chance and intention. His fascination with experimenting with reactive processes is of great importance: the observation, the action and reaction, the staging. In addition, Ecker has developed unique methods, such as the use of living organisms in photography or oxidation processes in painting. Space, time and light are recurring themes. His works are in international collections, with companies, private collectors and art lovers.
His driving force and training is the exploration of reactive processes, coupled with an imagination that changes as a work is created. Jokingly, Ecker describes that the way he works reminds him of a love affair. Time and again, Ecker has been asked by notable artists to follow this exact path. Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, whom he met on a trip to Asia immediately after the death of Jerry Garcia, or Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke, with whom he had a friendship that lasted for years, have confirmed Ecker's unorthodox path and encouraged him to do nothing else.
On Pic 1 you can see a test, a preparation for a new painting serias which was later named: "NOTHING IS LOST" On Pic 2: Building a light box for photography and preparation for a show. On pic 3: how ist starts, my favourite size (2mX2m) building a frame. On Pic 4: preparation . . . as you can see, I love working on the floor.
What inspires you?
It is curiosity that inspires and drives me to see how materials or organisms react with and to each other. This also includes the failure of an idea, of a work, that inspires me and does not let me go further and think even deeper about it.
Describe your creative process.
I always have a basic idea to start with. In the course of the work, the process becomes independent and I follow the process, which intuitively guides and guides me. This also includes failing and exploring new creative potential and seeing it as an opportunity. Space, time and light always play a major role, as do reactive material and/or organic processes
