Michelle House is a London based artist with a strong graphic eye and a talent for bold uplifting colour combinations. Michelle gained a BA degree in art textiles from Goldsmiths College, London and later went on to study digital fine art.
Using screen-printing, hand-cut stencils, photography and painting, she layers dyes and pigments on to combinations of natural fabrics. This results in colourful and unique artworks that incorporate her photographs of found patterns, geometry and abstracted urban architecture. Often using texture to hint at the surfaces within architecture, materials such as linen, cotton, wool and silk, are skilfully pieced together in combinations as wall-hangings and artworks stretched over wooden frames.
Alongside printing and painting abstract textile artworks, Michelle designs limited edition giclée prints on paper (incorporating her drawings and photography in the form of digital original artworks) and collage artworks made using textiles, print and paper.
She has been working with textiles and print for over twenty years creating artworks for exhibitions and commissions. However, her love of textiles was instilled at an early age. As a child she would regularly watch her mother cutting and sewing fabric, creating items of clothing, including costumes for school plays, her sister’s ballet tutus and school uniforms, along with curtains and cushions for the home.
Past clients include hospitals, hotels and more recently two large artworks for The British Academy's art collection.
Michelle working in her London studio measuring up stencils ready for printing and with shelves of pigments and dyes behind her. Hand-printed works in progress on the print table. When the print sections are finished, Michelle meticulously stitches them together and linings are hand stitched on the back of the wall-hangings in what is a very time consuming process.
What inspires you?
Colour is a big inspiration, the texture and pattern in textiles, especially printed textiles, vintage fabrics, tapestry and weaving, and modern architecture. I also love graphics and contemporary crafts like jewellery design and ceramics. When I have the chance I love going to see contemporary dance, an art form that I find incredibly inspiring.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
colourful, abstract and graphic
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
I love my squeegees, they're tools used for pulling ink across a screen when screen-printing
Where do you go for inspiration?
I love walking, whether that's around London taking in the ever changing architecture of the city which is in a constant state of flux and visiting the many galleries, or walking the hills of Surrey or Exmoor for big sky views and nature. I'm a keen swimmer and meditator and find both helpful in clearing my mind of clutter, ideas often follow .
