About the art
Artist statement
A grey polo pony has the knack of standing out on a polo field. But one with exceptional speed, class and the heart of a lioness - well, she'll quite simply own it. No comparison, no competition.
Portrait of the South African thoroughbred mare, Moscow. Originally bred for the race track, her talent flourished on the polo field and she rose to become one of the defining equine legends of the sport.
What I love most about this work, is that nothing was staged or planned as portraits often are. She was minutes away from taking to the field - and where other horses would be fidgeting, she was as cool as a cucumber. Big liquid black eyes just fixed on me, her elegant neck gently arched with curiosity. Neither of us seemed to have any interest in the game. It was one of those brief beautiful moments as you mirror the other. I see you.
Shot at the Cartier Queen's Cup.
